In Colombia, as elsewhere, indigenous peoples continue to face significant political and social tensions. Violence against Indigenous leaders remains a cause for concern, whilst their territorial rights are under threat – particularly following the repeal of a decree that provided legal protection for the “Línea Negra”, an ancestral boundary linking sacred sites, which continues to exist for Indigenous peoples despite this legal erosion.

Against this backdrop, the communities of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta are continuing their efforts to defend their lands, their knowledge and their ways of life. As the Colombian anthropologist Arturo Escobar points out, “the struggles of these peoples […] are not merely struggles for land, but for the defence of entire worlds”.

Tchendukua’s projects aim to support these local initiatives, in particular by assisting with territorial governance, the protection of traditional knowledge and expertise, and the strengthening of institutional links within a changing national context…
