ARTE: Indigenous Peoples of Colombia – The Arhuaco Mountain Range

A new series called ‘Peuples Racines’ has been available on ARTE since this week, including an episode filmed in Colombia amongst the Arhuacos, in collaboration with Tchendukua – Ici et Ailleurs.
From the icy tundra of Siberia to the mountains of Colombia, via the magnificent waters of Myanmar, we delve into the heart of five unique ecosystems where ancient traditions and modern science come together to preserve our planet.
The episode ‘Colombia: The Arhuaco Mountains’ takes us to northern Colombia, in the Sierra Nevada, where some 30,000 Arhuacos safeguard an ecosystem of exceptional biodiversity. Living off agriculture and foraging, they constantly express their gratitude to nature for providing for their needs.
Resisting the modern world and assimilation, they draw on their traditions to protect their territory from the threats it faces: guerrilla groups and paramilitary militias, global warming, deforestation and mining operations. “Everything is interdependent,” proclaim the members of this community, “animals, water, wind, earth and humans.” Today, a geographer and three biologists are working alongside these permaculture experts, who have succeeded in restoring hundreds of hectares of ravaged forest. For the Arhuacos care for their land as if it were a human body, in which every organ is essential to maintaining vital functions, preserving its memory in sacred sites.
