The year 2026 marks a decisive milestone in Tchendukua’s commitment to Colombia. For the first time, a formal partnership has been established with the Kankuamo people, heirs to the Tayrona civilisation, just like the Kogis, Wiwas and Arhuacos, opening a new chapter firmly focused on the transmission of knowledge. This collaboration supports the communities’ “own educational process” and benefits nearly 400 pupils at the Institución Etnoeducativa Makumake, a central hub of Kankuamo cultural life.
In this context, a landmark initiative has come to fruition: the acquisition and restoration of a plot of land intended to accommodate and strengthen the school’s activities. In the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, where access to land often depends on complex mechanisms such as the purchase of mejoras (land that has undergone development), this initiative has both educational and territorial significance. It aims to provide a space dedicated to learning, the transmission of traditional knowledge and the strengthening of the cultural identity of younger generations, in an environment marked by significant land and security constraints.
“Land
reclamation would no longer be merely a land-related act, but an educational endeavour.”
Elizabeth Castillo Guzmán, anthropologist at the University of Cauca.
